25hours Hotel Piazza San Paolino
Florence
Angels or demons? Daredevil charm and whimsical quirks shake up this Renaissance city.
Shaking up the historic city with a bit of devious drama, the 25hours Hotel design is eclectically inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, complete with ‘Heaven or Hell’-themed rooms. With an unsurprisingly OTT aesthetic, the former monastery complex is transformed by interior design doyenne, Paola Navone, into huge multi-coloured spaces, stuffed with retro pieces, curiosities, artworks, and graffiti.
Surrounding the lush courtyard garden, the ‘Heaven’ rooms are all breezy whites and silver angel wings, where televisions are hidden behind oversized T-shirts bearing ‘Fly to Heaven’ slogans. The ‘Hell’ rooms come in deep, dark red, with slate grey linens and black toilet fixtures, whilst decorative cards pronouncing the Seven Deadly Sins hang overhead. Take your pick where you want to end up – whether saint or sinner, we won’t judge.
Why you'll love it
The on-site Alimentari, which has you prepped for all the necessities, by which we mean of course: groceries, snacks, espressos, and wine
The ‘Large Plus’ rooms, with private gardens and outdoor showers
‘Cinema Paradiso’, a brick-vaulted screening room - and aptly named place - to revisit the Italian classics

Where you'll be
Santa Maria Novella, Florence
In the Santa Maria Novella neighbourhood in historic Florence, you’re just five minutes away from Via Tornabuoni, where you can mingle with well-heeled fashionistas browsing the luxury stores. Go hunting for antiques along the Via Maggio and stock up on perfume and home goods at the original Santa Maria Novella store, located in a 13th century convent. Grab a gelato and eat it sitting on a bridge with views over the Arno before you climb up the Duomo at sunset for golden views. Art is the city’s lifeblood, and no visit is complete without losing yourself in the Uffizi and admiring David at the Academia, but don’t forget the smaller sites like the Medici Chapel that are equally enthralling. On summer evenings, do it like the locals: grab a takeaway pizza, open a bottle of wine, and enjoy it all al fresco in the piazzas.
